Civil Partnership Visa Explained
A Civil Partnership Visa serves a very similar purpose to a spouse visa: it allows a foreign civil partner of a UK citizen or settled person to live together in the UK. Civil partnerships are fully recognised in UK law. This visa is available if you are already in a civil partnership that is legally valid in the UK or abroad. It leads to 2.5 years of leave (with extensions) and, after 5 years, to indefinite leave (settlement).
Key Requirements
Your civil partnership must be legally recognised in the UK, and your relationship must be genuine and subsisting. You must also meet the financial and English language requirements.
- Genuine Relationship: Your civil partnership must be legally recognised in the UK.
- Financial Requirement: You and your partner must have a minimum combined income of £29,000 per year.
- English Language: You must demonstrate a basic knowledge of English (A1 level or above).
- Adequate Accommodation: You must have a suitable place to live together in the UK.
Application and Process Steps
You apply online under the “family visa (partner/civil partner)” category. You will need to upload your civil partnership certificate and supporting evidence, including proof of living together or shared finances. If applying from abroad, you’ll attend an appointment at a visa centre for biometrics. The documentation and timeline are the same as for a spouse visa. Once granted, the visa is valid for 2 years and 9 months.
